2. Brainstorming.
T. There’s a person in American history who has always been remembered by his countrymen, though he lived more than a century ago. I suggest that we should listen to this poem written by an eminent American poet who happened to be this person’s contemporary. I’d like you to figure out both the author and the character of the verse. Name them and say for what occasion this poem was written.
O Captain! My Captain!
(W. Whitman)
O Captain! My Captain! Our fearful trip is done?
The ship has weather’d every rack, the prize we sought is won.
The port is near, the bells I hear the people all exuting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring;
But O heart! heart! heart!
O the bleeding drops of red,
Where on the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.
O Captain! My Captain! Rise up and hear the bells,
Rise up – for you the flag is flung – for you the bugle trills,
For you bouquets and ribbon’d wreaths – for you the shores a-crowding,
For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning;
Here Captain! Dear father!
This arm beneath your head!
It is some dream that on the deck,
You’ve fallen cold and dead.
My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still,
My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will,
The ship is anchor’d safe and sound, its voyage closed and done,
From fearful trip the victor ship comes in with object won;
Exult O shores, and ring O bells!
But I with mournful tread,
Walk the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.
Ps listen to the poem, then do the task and formulate the title of the lesson. The teacher says: “That’s right, the topic of our lesson today is “President Abraham Lincoln in the Pace of History”. We are going to learn some more information about this outstanding person and to speak about his character traits.
T. Dear friends, you have one more poem on your desks. (“Смерть поэта” М.Ю. Лермонтов) Let’s speak a little about it, too. What is the title of this poem? Who is the author? Who is the poem devoted to?
Why, do you think, I have chosen these two poems? Was it done by chance?
P1. I don’t think so.
P2. Of course not.
P3. It seems to me, not occasionally, because both poems are devoted to very famous people of America and Russia: a beloved president A. Lincoln and a beloved poet A. Pushkin
T. I quite agree with you. What else is alike in the poems?
P1. The theme of the poems is the same: the assassination of these great men.
P2. The poems are full of grief and compassion many felt for their martyred president and poet.
P3. Both poems are written by famous poets who cannot be indifferent to their beloved geniuses’ death.
P4. Walt Whitman and M. Lermontov are in shock, unable to comprehend the loss.
T. Yes, you are right. It was a loss for the citizens of the whole country both in Russia and in America. Find the lines in the poem “O, Captain!”, proving great national love of people for their idol.
P1. reads the lines of the 2nd paragraph.
T. And you know that crowds of people in St. Petersburg gathered to say good-bye to their favourite poet, the father of Russian poetry A.S. Pushkin.
So, as you see, these poems have much in common. The idea of love, grief, compassion and hatred to the assassins runs through these poems. And what is the intonation of the poems?
P2. It’s very sad and mournful.
T. And what artistic means of expression is the language of the poets rich in?
Ps. Rhetorical questions, exclamations, epithets, comparisons, metaphors, personifications, addresses.
